HMD Global is likely to bring out its big gun, The Nokia 9. The company’s flagship smartphone is likely to make its way to the market towards the end of this year . We’ve all seen leaks and design concepts of the phone surfacing from time to time. Adding to the bag of leaks a video just surfaced recently which shows us a very clear picture of how the smartphone is going to look like.
According to the leaked renders, the smartphone may have a dual edge curved display and a very sleek body much like the Samsung’s Galaxy S7. This curved design has also been carried to the back of the phone as well, instead of keeping it boxy. Nokia 9 is also rumored to have a glass back, much like all the flagships of 2017, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the Note 8 line and the Apple’s iPhone 8 and iPhone X lineup. This lead to another conclusion, and that’s the wireless charging feature being very likely to be present on the smartphone.
In accordance to the leaked photos and videos of the purported Nokia 9 posted by OnLeaks, which by the way are in par with the latest leaks by the Chinese website Baidu, the phone will have a power button and the volume rockers on the right of the device. The left of the device will house the sim tray, which most probably will be a hybrid sim slot. The top of the phone seems to be left completely plain with just an antennae line running across the phone’s sides instead of the back of the phone. The bottom of the phone is where things get interesting. The company seems to have ditched the 3.5mm headphone jack and instead chosen to go with a USB Type-C port instead. The bottom also houses a pair of speaker grills and a microphone. The antennae band is also seen running across the bottom of the smartphone.
The glass back of the smartphone houses the camera sensors and the fingerprint sensor.
If these leaks are actually true, the finish of the Nokia 9 looks as premium as it gets . Although, it looks like it would prove to be a fingerprint and scratch magnet. That’s definitely a very small price you pay for that premium look and In-hand feel of the device . To counter it you can always slap on a skin or add a case.
There are multiple reports suggesting that the flagship will come packed with a dual lens Carl ZEISS camera sensor. This makes sense as there have been reports in the past claiming that HMD Global will be continuing its partnership with Carl ZEISS after its success in the Nokia 8. The sensor on this phone will pack 22 Mega-Pixels at the back and 12 Mega-pixels at the front. The back camera will be accompanied with a dual tone LED flash. This dual lens camera will certainly be a huge improvement over the single lens camera on the Nokia 8. This dual lens camera will be very helpful when clicking portrait photos and getting that shallow depth of field effect with the bokeh. There have been no reports so far confirming the camera to have OIS. The phone seems to support 4K recording at 30fps and we’ll also conclude it to have a portrait mode in the camera app to take advantage of the dual lens to give you the DSLR- like blurred background.
The internals of the smartphones are what makes this phone give the other flagships a run for its money. The smartphone is expected to come packed with a snapdragon 835Soc along with 6GB and 8GB of ram, much like the OnePlus 5. We’ve all experienced the buttery smooth experience of this combo on the OnePlus 5. Other rumored specifications include IP68 certification for water and dust resistance and 64GB and 128GB of inbuilt storage which is expandable. The phone is also rumored to have an iris scanner which makes this phone, the company’s first device to house an iris scanner. The phone also packs enough juice to keep you going all day without having it run out of battery towards the evening as it comes packed with a mighty 3,800 mAh battery. That should be just enough to get you through your regular workday with about 5-6 hours of screen on time, seeing how efficient the processor on this smartphone is.
Nokia 9 comes packed with 5.5-inch screen which is an AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels or 2K and a PPI of about 534, which is mighty sharp . That should give us a very vibrant display and good visibility even under direct sunlight. The phone with the 2K panel also makes up for a very good media consumption device, great for enjoying VR content. The renders show that there’s no home button present on the device which indicates that there’ll be onscreen buttons and the phone might just have an 18:9 aspect ratio following the band wagon just like other flagships from all the major manufacturers.
Pricing and Verdict:
The Nokia 9 is expected to launch with a price tag of 750 Euros which is approximately equal to 58,000 Indian rupees. We all saw that coming with the list features its offering. The phone seems to be a solid on the specs sheets. How well it lives up to all this hype, is something we’ll only know once we get our hands on this device. It’s a very bold move by HMD Global to go against the ‘Big boys’ from Samsung, Apple, Google, LG etc. In terms of specs as well as the pricing, the phone seems to be a true flagship capable device. We’ll only know all the information for sure after this device is set to hit the streets.
