So What does IoT mean to you?
Inception of IoT and its ramifications on the general populace. In the 2013 publication, “Designing the Internet of Things”; Adrian McEwen draws a beautiful yet simplistic analogy between Next Generation Technology and Magic.
It goes as follows,
”Technology has always been associated with magic, and so this will be true almost by default for the Internet of Things. But there is more to it than that: a key element of many enchanted objects is that above and beyond their practical enchantment they are given a name and a personality-implying an intelligence greater than strictly necessary to carry out the task for which they are designed…”
Although the author clearly elucidates the paradigm change that IoT will be bringing in the world of applied science and for those who deal with state of the art technology on a daily basis, there still remains the question of how it would affect the rest of us ?
Most futuristic technologies, over last few decades, have had a major disparity in their accessibility to the avant garde and the general population. But IoT could be an exception to this trend. Despite still being in the developing phase, it has already started showing signs of impact on the general infrastructure of our society and is much more accessible than its predecessors.
Following are a few applications of IoT that are accessible, affordable and of direct utility to the common man :
Priced at 4.5k, CariQ is a vehicle monitoring and maintenance device , that constantly gathers and analyses data from the distributed systems of your car. It presents this data to the user in form of direct and concise directives and warnings like service alerts to the fuel economy, location information, towing alerts, crash alerts, over-speeding alerts, battery health and also sundry other technical problems.
Connected with your social media accounts, it allows you to share vehicle statistics with your fellow car enthusiasts.
My personal favourite of all the recent IoT devices launched, Reos Lite is an absolute game changer in Home and Interior Lighting business. Bluetooth connectivity, Multiple preset modes based on your mood, a color palette of 16 MILLION to choose from, are reasons enough to have this in your home. But the most amazing of all its functionality is its music mode. It’s basically your personalized Light-Music Medley where the light is synced with the music being played and then changes in synergy with the rhythm. And all this can be done with your smartphone, while you slouch over your couch !
The Lite app comes preloaded with various customizable notifications such as call alert, messages, weather forecast, social media update and much more.
At 1700 bucks, it is a must have for all.
For all the Fitness freaks reading this article, THIS is the blessing of IoT for you guys. Aside from measuring your weight, fat percentage and body mass index, Aria also organises and stores this data in your personal fitbit account. It analyses all this information and provides you a detailed schematic of your fitness growth as well as further helps you in delinating realistic goals accordingly. Synced over WiFi, Aria can manage up to 8 users and provide all the features to each directly on their smartphones. This multi user functionality makes Aria, priced around 20k on amazon, much more affordable for anyone with serious fitness goals. In a nutshell, FITBIT Aria is the cheapest and most systematic personal trainer you could ever get.
Aside from the affordable and accessible personal appliances based on IoT, like mentioned above, the commonwealth will also be reaping its benefits through public facilities provided by government. Public sectors of Transportation, Healthcare, Security and Administration should soon see an exponential growth in efficiency and facilities provided. To sum it up, unlike the bygone era of preferential and restricted impact of technology on our society; IoT could be the inflection point of scientific journey that aims to serve and enrich all, and not just the ones at the topmost strata.
Bill Gates has famously quoted ,
” As we look ahead into the next century, Leaders will be those who empower others.”
So perhaps, the inception of IoT might very well be the greatest sign of things to come.
